Is your Hair Ready for Autumn?

It has certainly been a glorious summer, one of the best in years, and even those of us who haven’t managed to go abroad have been basking in the sunshine here in the UK. While all those sunny days, swimming parties and backyard barbecues have been wonderful for our morale, they have not been so kind to our hair. Most of us have hair that is dried out from heat, chlorine, salt and sea breezes and now is the time to give it some TLC.

Get a Trim

If the ends of your hair are dry and frazzled the kindest thing you can do is trim them off. Once a hair has split is is difficult to repair it and a blunt cut is a much better look than a straggly do. A trim every six weeks is still the recommended way to keep hair in tip-top shape.

Maximise the Moisture

Sun-kissed locks are crying out for deep conditioning. Make sure it really sinks into the hair follicle by leaving it on for at least five or ten minutes and wrapping your head in a plastic cap or warm towel before rinsing. The cooler air that is coming with Autumn will have less humidity and our already dry and brittle hair will need lots of moisturising. On this same note, a daily treatment of oil or serum through the ends will optimise and add shine.

What You Wear Can Hurt Your Hair

When it’s time to put on sweaters and boots again, a lot of us forget that tucking hair inside coat collars can cause damage and breakage. It helps to protect long hair by tying it into braids or pony tails, otherwise the wind can play havoc and cause tangles. Use a silk scarf to stop collars rubbing and choose woolly hats that have a lining in them to prevent friction.

Put Down The Hot Tools

If possible, take a break from hot tongs and straighteners to allow hair to recover. There’s time now to get hair back into health and vigour before it has to cope with the harsher weather conditions of autumn and winter.
