What is a FUE hair transplant?

A FUE hair transplant (Follicular Unit Extraction) is a minimally invasive hair loss procedure that harvests hair by removing the individual follicular units, also called grafts, by the root and transplanting them onto other areas to encourage hair growth.

FUE transplants are carried out follicle by follicle and in the direction of the hair growth in order to provide a natural-looking hairline. The follicles are chosen according to their density and implanted into the required areas of your scalp.

This hair restoration process is less invasive than other hair transplant methods and can be performed without sutures (stitches) or leaving large scars on your scalp. This means there’s no need for long rest periods between sessions, so your transplant procedure can be completed in a single day.

Here at KSL Clinic, our experienced team of surgeons provide the highest quality of care during and after our procedures to ensure that every FUE hair transplant produces the best outcome.

How does FUE work?

FUE transplants are carried out by our qualified professionals using the latest industry equipment. Each FUE procedure is performed under a microscope, which helps to ensure absolute precision every time.

Each follicular unit is extracted individually from a donor area and then transplanted elsewhere to encourage hair growth on the new site.

Here’s an overview of how our FUE procedure works:

Our patients are administered a local anaesthetic before surgery.

01

A special device called a Micro Punch tool is used to create a small, round puncture in the skin around each follicular unit that’s being removed. It punches out each follicle by its core, one by one.

02

The follicular unit is gently lifted from the skin using hair-transplant forceps. The FUE method means that smaller incisions are required, which results in the likelihood of less tissue damage and scarring to the surrounding skin.

03

Each harvested graft is carefully sorted by how many individual hairs there are in each follicle and how dense they are. As each graft is different, this technique helps our surgeons to determine the best placement for each unit.

04

Once sorted, the grafts are stored to ensure they’re kept in optimal condition before transplantation.

05

The grafts are then individually implanted onto the new site where thinning or balding has occurred. Our surgeons meticulously select and transplant each graft to mimic the hair growth on the implant area to ensure a natural finish.

06

Following the procedure, our surgeons bandage the full area of the transplant to protect the implanted follicles and aid recovery.

07

What are the benefits of a FUE transplant?

At KSL Clinic, we believe that understanding the benefits of an FUE transplant is crucial for making an informed decision about your hair restoration journey.

Here are some of the key advantages of choosing FUE at KSL Clinic:

Less Invasive

It’s minimally invasive as the Micro Punch tool only removes a singular root cell without disrupting any other tissue from the grafting area. No incision or suture is required.

Minimal scarring

The small scratches are less than 1 mm in diameter, leaving undetectable scarring to the naked eye that can only be seen through a microscope.

Shorter recovery time

As the scratches are so minuscule, they often heal within a few days. This means that patients typically heal from FUE procedures more quickly than other methods.

Hair can be transplanted on various areas

FUE procedures can transplant grafts onto areas like eyebrows, moustaches, and beards that are suffering from hair loss.

What is the difference between FUE and FUT?

FUE is the most commonly used procedure for hair transplants, but you may have also heard of FUT procedures. The FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation) method removes a larger section or strip of skin from the patient, from just below the core of the hair follicles. Each follicular unit is then extracted from this strip and implanted onto a new area of skin.

As FUT removes a more significant section of follicles than FUE, which extracts micro-sizes individual follicle units, FUT procedures can leave a larger linear scar at the extraction site. The process of graft extraction for FUT transplants may also require stitches, which means that patients may take longer to heal than with a FUE procedure.

FUE

  • Less invasive as grafts are removed individually
  • Reduced scarring at the donor site where the grafts are removed
  • No linear scar
  • Minimal discomfort during the procedure
  • Shorter recovery period
  • More precise and natural results
  • Higher chances of success

FUT

  • May leave a noticeable linear scar
  • Extended recovery period compared to FUE procedures
  • Limited donor areas as it relies on the availability of a healthy patch of skin with suitable hair follicles

Here at KSL Clinic, we’re committed to providing our patients with the most advanced and minimally invasive hair transplants, which is why we specialise exclusively in FUE procedures.

How much does a FUE hair transplant cost?

Your hair transplant cost will vary depending on several factors, such as:

The severity of the hair loss

The desired appearance

The amount of grafts required

Hair colour and texture

These factors can all affect how long a FUE procedure takes, so it can be difficult to quote a definitive price as it varies between each patient.

To get an accurate quote, we recommend that you make an appointment with our consultants, where we’ll review your hair loss condition and identify the best site for available donor hair.

FUE Transplant FAQs

Is a FUE transplant painful?

Our trained surgeons administer a local anaesthetic prior to the procedure, where patients might experience a sharp scratching sensation. After that point, however, you won’t feel any pain at all.

The needles we use are very small, and our experts know how to keep the pain to a minimum. In the unlikely case that pain arises, we can help with that by using an anaesthetic.

What does it feel like afterwards?

Most people describe the feeling afterwards as tightness at the front of the head and a dull ache at the back. In most cases, this feeling soon subsides, and it’s nothing to worry about, nor should you find it too distracting. If the pain does persist, a simple painkiller like paracetamol is usually enough to help with this.

Will I be put to sleep?

No, at KSL Clinic, we don’t put patients to sleep before a FUE procedure. You will be awake for the entire process, during which time you are free to watch Netflix in the surgery room, listen to music, read, or use your mobile device/tablet.

It’s carried out under local anaesthetic to help reduce complications and delays and make it a more comfortable experience. It is a simple and quick process, and you can return home on the same day of your procedure.

How long does a hair transplant take?

Each procedure is different, but a single hair transplant surgery session can take between 6-9 hours – the exact time will depend on the size of procedure, the type of hair, and more.

Will my grafts shed?

After the procedure, you will go through a normal period of shedding and growth, as follows:

  • Up to 6 weeks: all to none of your hair follicles might shed during this time.
  • Up to 3 months: new hairs start to come through the skin.
  • Up to 6 months: more growth and clear density.
  • Up to 12 months: full results by this point. In some cases, it might take slightly longer.

When will I see the results?

Following a FUE procedure, the full results can often take up to 12-18 months. In most cases, the results are evident and almost there by the 9-month mark, so you don’t have to wait too long to get an idea of how it will look.

Is the swelling bad?

As with any surgery of this nature, potential swelling always varies from person to person.

However, we give you medication, if necessary, to reduce this swelling as much as possible. Sometimes the swelling can descend to the eye area due to gravity. Depending on their occupation, most patients can return to work in the same week.

How do I know if I'm suitable for a FUE transplant?

A FUE hair transplant is specific and personal to each patient, as every patient will have their own expectations for their desired results. The success of a FUE surgery also depends on a number of factors, including:

  • The patient’s hair colour – Hair colour is one of the key factors that can determine the efficacy of a FUE hair transplant. This is because those with a similar hair and scalp colour can appear less bald than those who have a contrasting hair and scalp colour. Therefore, patients with a more similar hair and skin colour can be better-suited for a FUE transplant.
  • The patient’s hair density – Those with a good density of hair follicles around the donor area can be stronger candidates for a FUE hair transplant as they will have more donor follicles to be transplanted to the areas suffering from hair loss.
  • The patient’s scalp flexibility – Scalp flexibility or laxity refers to the tightness of the scalp. It can be more difficult to remove and transplant follicles from patients with a low scalp flexibility, or a tight scalp.

There are also a number of things that can make patients less suitable for FUE hair transplants, such as:

  • The patient’s donor area – A healthy donor area is key for a successful FUE hair transplant, which is why people with an unhealthy or diseased donor area can be less suitable for a transplant.
  • Patients with unrealistic or high expectations – While FUE hair transplants can be an incredibly effective and life-changing procedure for many patients, it’s important to remember that every surgery and hair loss situation is different. This means that results vary between patients, and it’s unrealistic to compare or expect the exact same results from previous procedures.

The best way to understand whether a FUE hair transplant is right for you is to book a free consultation with one of our experts to discuss your hair restoration expectations and suitability.

Why are FUE procedures cheaper abroad?

As with many medical procedures, you might be able to find cheaper alternatives in other countries. However, that does not mean you get the same quality as you would here. It’s important to remember that you get what you pay for, and if you find a suspiciously cheap procedure, it might not give you the best results.

Bear in mind that we also offer payment plans to make paying for a quality procedure more manageable. Learn more about our finance options and interest-free payment plans here.

Are FUE transplants only for men?

No, the idea that only men can have the FUE procedure is a myth. Anybody can have this done who wants to improve the density and regrowth of their hair. Of course, most of our clients are men because they are worried about male pattern baldness and hairline recession, but women can and do have this procedure done, too. Find out more about hair transplants for women here.

Does the transplant look natural?

Over the last few years, there have been some incredible improvements and advancements in the technology we use behind FUE transplants. The result of these improvements is that you can see some truly natural results, especially as it is being carried out by highly qualified professionals. We will make sure that you are happy with your hair, FUE eyebrow transplant or FUE beard transplant.
