Understanding female hair loss

Did you know that female pattern hair loss (FPHL) affects around 40% of women by age 50?

Causes of female hair loss aren’t as commonly spoken about as men’s, but a wide range of factors can affect women of all ages. These include:

  • Genetics (including FPHL)
  • Pregnancy
  • Menopause
  • Medication
  • Over styling
  • Stress
  • Medical conditions

While some occur naturally and can be more challenging to cure, female hair loss is usually not permanent and can be treatable. Regrowth can be encouraged with lifestyle changes, medication, and topical treatments; however, one of the most effective remedies is undergoing a hair transplant.

A hair transplant can usually be offered to women suffering from permanent hair loss, often from conditions like androgenic alopecia and female pattern baldness. This is because the hair won’t grow back, and new healthy follicles can be implanted in these areas.

However, women suffering from temporary hair loss, like alopecia areata, may not always be eligible as the hair has a chance of growing back naturally. For these cases, we may suggest a non-surgical hair treatment instead, like platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy. Find out more about PRP treatments here.

Hair transplants for women

Here at KSL Clinic, we’re passionate about helping our clients regain their confidence and restore their natural beauty, which is why we offer a number of hair restoration options for women.

  • Hairline restoration – In cases where women are starting to see their hairline recede or if they naturally have a high hairline, we offer hair implants that can lower, fill in, or reshape their existing hairline.
  • Thinning hair restoration – Hair loss in the centre of the scalp or around the parting line is a common symptom of female pattern baldness. We offer treatments that can implant healthy follicles in these areas to promote new growth and thickness.
  • Eyebrow transplants – Our eyebrow transplants can help women achieve fuller and more defined brows so they don’t have to rely on makeup.

Our team of GMC-registered surgeons has performed thousands of treatments and is experienced in delivering successful female hair transplants as a remedy for FPHL and as a cosmetic procedure.

We know that every case is different and has its own unique requirements. To understand how we can develop a personalised approach for you, book your free consultation with one of our expert surgeons today.

How do female hair transplants work?

Our surgeons use the same method for female hair transplants as for our male patients: follicular unit extraction (FUE).

FUE transplants are a minimally invasive hair restoration procedure that can be carried out without sutures (stitches) that often result in noticeable scars. This means that our female hair loss treatments are a subtle and effective solution for encouraging new growth.

It works by harvesting individual follicular units, or grafts, from a healthy donor site and transplanting them to areas. Here’s a closer look into how our FUE hair transplants for women work:

Initial consultation – The first step for every KSL Clinic patient is to visit us for a thorough consultation, where we learn your goals, expectations, and hair loss history to determine the best approach for a transplant. Our surgeon will assess your transplant and donor areas, carefully considering your hair’s natural growth pattern and density.

01

Local anaesthesia application – Before the procedure, we’ll administer a local anaesthetic to ensure minimal discomfort throughout the surgery. This step is essential for a pain-free experience.

02

Follicle extraction – Our surgeons extract individual hair follicles from the donor area using a specialised Micro Punch tool that punches a minuscule circle around each follicle. This tool allows for precise removal of each graft, minimising tissue damage and scarring.

03

Follicle sorting – Once extracted, each follicular unit is examined and sorted. This helps to make sure that each graft is placed strategically according to its characteristics, such as the number of hairs in each follicle and its density, to give the most natural finished appearance.

04

Graft transplantation – The prepared grafts are then individually implanted in the designated area. Our surgeons pay close attention to the direction and angle of natural growth to ensure the transplanted follicles blend seamlessly with existing hair.

05

Post-procedure care – Following the transplant, the treated area is bandaged to protect the new grafts and aid in healing. Our team provides comprehensive post-operative care instructions to ensure a smooth recovery and the best possible results.

06

Our highly skilled surgeons use only the best industry tools and techniques to deliver the best results for our clients. We perform every procedure under a microscope for optimal precision, so you can be sure that you’ll receive a natural-looking finish that lasts.

What are the benefits of hair transplants for women?

We believe that understanding the benefits of a FUE transplant is crucial for making an informed decision about your hair restoration journey.

Here are some of the key advantages of choosing FUE at KSL Clinic:

Achieve the exact hairstyle you’re looking for

A transplant can help fill in sparse areas, even out growth, or reshape your hairline to create a fuller head of hair. Our surgeons work closely with you to understand your goals and expectations to help you achieve the perfect results you’re looking for.

Minimally invasive

Hair transplants at KSL Clinic are minimally invasive as our surgeons use specialist tools to extract and implant hair follicles without the need for large incisions or stitches.

Virtually scarless

The technique used for the FUE method leaves tiny scratches that are almost invisible without a microscope. These small incisions heal quickly and are hidden within the natural hair growth, so evidence of the procedure is unnoticeable.

Fast recovery

As the scratches used to remove the follicles are so small – less than 1 mm in diameter – they typically heal within a few days. This means patients require minimal downtime before returning to work or continuing with life as usual.

Natural-looking results

Our skilled surgeons carefully replicate the natural growth pattern of your existing hair, ensuring that the transplanted follicles blend seamlessly and are undetectable.

Walk-in walk-out procedure

We specialise in walk-in walk-out procedures, which means once you’ve booked in for your treatment, your surgery is completed in a few hours and you can go home on the same day.

Long-lasting results

After your FUE hair transplant, you can enjoy long-lasting and permanent results. While some of your grafts may shed in the weeks after your procedure, this is expected, and you will start to see new growth in the following months.

Before and after results of a female hair transplant...

How much does a female hair transplant cost?

It’s difficult to state an exact cost for a female hair transplant surgery as each case is unique and influenced by several factors. These include:

  • The extent of the patient’s hair loss
  • The patient’s desired look
  • The number of grafts required
  • The patient’s hair characteristics

These variables mean that the price of hair restoration changes from person to person.

The best and most accurate way to find out the price of female hair loss treatment is to book a consultation with a member of our team. At your consultation, we’ll assess your hair growth, discuss your expectations, and determine the most suitable approach for your transplant.

KSL Clinic has a number of convenient consultation locations across the UK, making it easy to find a clinic near you. Contact us today to schedule your free consultation and take the first step towards achieving the hair you’ve always wanted.

Women’s hair transplant FAQs

What types of female hair transplants do you offer?

For women, we can provide a FUE hair transplant for the scalp or eyebrows to thicken any patchiness or reshape your hairline or brows.

Is a FUE transplant painful?

No, our qualified surgeons administer a local anaesthetic before your treatment, so you won’t feel anything other than the slight sensation of the anaesthetic needle being inserted.

After that, you won’t feel any pain at all. The needles we use for the procedure are very small, and our experts know how to keep pain to a minimum.

How long does a female hair transplant take?

Every procedure differs, but a single hair transplant surgery session can take 6-9 hours. The exact time will depend on the size of the procedure, the type of hair, and more.

Am I awake during the procedure?

You are awake during the procedure, but you won’t feel a thing as we use local anaesthetic to numb the donor and transplanted areas. This reduces pain and ensures that you can travel home once the surgery has been completed.

We have a TV and radio in our surgery rooms, so you can watch a film or the latest series on Netflix, read a book, or use your smartphone.

Is a female hair transplant the same as a male hair transplant?

While the method used for female and male hair transplants is the same, the FUE transplant technique has a few differences in where and how the grafts are implanted.

Women more often suffer from hair loss sporadically throughout the scalp, whereas men tend to see loss at the hairline or crown. This means that the areas where the grafts are transplanted often differ; it’s usually a case of filling in larger thinning patches for men, while women typically have extracted follicles implanted within areas of existing hairs. This can be more difficult to perform as surgeons must take great care not to disrupt the surrounding healthy follicles.

How will I feel after?

Immediately after the procedure, you’ll likely feel some tightness or a dull ache which we provide medication for and in your after-care pack. You’ll find that the sensation will disappear after around 48 hours. If the pain does persist, a simple painkiller like paracetamol is usually enough to help with this.

What should I expect after the procedure?

You won’t need to wait too long to see the results of your hair transplant, but before you do, you’ll go through a period of shedding and growth. It will follow a similar pattern to this:

  • Up to 6 weeks: all to none of your hair follicles might shed during this time (this is entirely normal and part of the process)
  • Up to 3 months: new hairs start to grow
  • Up to 6 months: there’ll be more growth and clear density
  • Up to 12 months: you’ll most likely see the full results of the procedure, though it is possible that it can take up to 18 months.

Will it look natural?

Yes, our surgeons are meticulous in selecting the right follicles and placing them in a direction that mimics your natural hair growth. The results are incredibly natural, and the new growth should blend seamlessly with the existing hair.

When can I style my hair again after a female hair transplant?

Our after-care programme provides comprehensive care instructions, but we typically recommend waiting until day five after your surgery to wash your hair.

As for styling with chemical products and heat tools, we recommend waiting until at least 3-4 weeks post-procedure. Your transplanted grafts will be vulnerable and more sensitive initially, so waiting for them to fully heal before applying anything that could hinder your results is vital.

We also suggest waiting until four weeks after your procedure, when your follicles have healed, to have a haircut.
