The KSL Clinic team often speaks with patients who believe that hair transplants may be unsuitable for ginger or red hair, but this isn’t true!
Hair transplants are based on the availability and quality of the donor hair, not hair colour. If a redhead has enough healthy hair follicles—usually at the back or sides of the scalp—then a transplant is entirely possible.
In fact, red hair tends to be thicker and often more coarse or wiry. This can be a benefit, as thicker hair provides better coverage per graft.
Facts About Hair Transplants for Ginger Hair
- The hair transplant procedure is the same as for any other hair colour. Individual donor follicles are chosen from an area of thicker growth and transplanted into the target area.
- Red hair is often naturally thicker and more textured, which can be an advantage—each graft covers more scalp, making the results look fuller with fewer follicles.
- The only difference for patients with ginger hair is the skill used when grading and sorting the follicles to ensure they perfectly match existing hair in terms of colour, shade, texture, and growth direction.
“The process for transplanting red hair is exactly the same as for any other hair colour. As long as there’s enough healthy donor hair, there’s no reason a redhead can’t achieve the same natural, long-lasting results. The key is working with a team that understands how to match tone and texture with precision.”

What Is the Difference Between a Ginger Hair Transplant and Another Procedure?
We noted above that there isn’t a specific treatment process used for red hair transplants, but some providers might refer to this type of procedure as a specialist service, given that it may not be available through all hair restoration clinics.
As always, our advice is to consider the Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) technique, which involves extracting donor follicles one at a time, as we’ve explained.
Why FUE over any alternatives? There are several reasons we believe this is the ideal approach:
- FUE is less invasive and doesn’t require the removal of a strip of tissue, which leaves a linear scar, as you’d expect in a Follicular Unit Transplantation or FUT hair transplant.
- The process uses the latest tools and techniques, including a tiny specialised Micro Punch that creates microscopic incisions about a mm across. This translates into faster recovery times, no visible scarring and a significant reduction in risk.
- For redheads and other patients with delicate or less common hair types, FUE is even more advisable since it allows us to manage the exact placement, angle, and direction of every individual follicle for a natural, impossible-to-spot outcome.
It’s also very important that any patient with red, ginger, or light-coloured hair work with a hair restoration team that offers a high level of aftercare.
Standard advice, for example, is to keep the scalp out of direct sunlight for a couple of weeks, but a lack of this guidance could have a more serious impact on the health and viability of transplanted follicles for these patient groups.
Why Are Hair Transplants for Redheads Considered a Specialist Procedure?
Ginger or red hair is the rarest colour in the world, and it is all down to genes like MC1R, which determine your skin and hair colour.
Many redheads have naturally more sensitive and delicate skin that burns or reddens easily, which is why this should always be factored into aftercare planning.
However, it’s not the colour of the hair itself that makes a ginger hair transplant more complex because redheads might be prone to pattern hair loss, hair thinning or a receding hairline, just like any other patient.
- Natural red hair can have varied textures and thicknesses or might even differ in the amount of wave or curl in the hair at different parts of the scalp.
- Hair transplant clinicians must ensure that every transplanted follicle is selected for a seamless finish, which can mean the transplant process is more time-consuming for patients with curlier hair follicles, the hardest type of follicle to transplant.
- Patients with sensitive skin may require customised aftercare, or any indications of existing irritations will need to be tackled before the patient is a great candidate for a hair transplant.
Provided your hair restoration provider has sufficient skill, expertise and knowledge to overcome these challenges, they have no issue completing a hair transplant regardless of the colour of your hair.

Will a Hair Transplant for Red Hair Look Natural?
Yes—with the caveats we’ve already mentioned that this depends on the talent of your hair transplant surgeon and the transplant technique you select.
We talked earlier about the FUE hair transplant process, and it’s especially important to use a minimally invasive approach for redheads with thinner or less dense hair or paler red hair.
That’s because scarring left behind after other less advanced transplant methods could be more visible or easier to see if it isn’t easily concealed behind hair growth.
Matching each follicle with precision and using only your own donor follicles rather than synthetic or dyed ones ensures flawless healed transplant results, with transplanted hairs fitting into your existing growth pattern.

How Effective Are Hair Transplants for Patients With Red Hair?
As with all types of hair, there are some scenarios in which a patient with ginger hair isn’t a hair transplant candidate, and that could be down to the following factors, as a few examples:
- Having very little remaining hair growth, without sufficient follicles that we can use as donor hairs to complete the transplant.
- Hair loss that has progressed past the point at which a hair transplant would be successful, or where the area of hair loss is too large to cover.
- Complications with scalp conditions, where a hair transplant wouldn’t be permanent and therefore wouldn’t be a procedure we could recommend.
However, for most patients with red or ginger hair, a personalised hair transplant is viable, effective and provides permanent results, transforming areas of hair loss and thinning and delivering the appearance and confidence they had hoped for.
