What Is an Alopecia Hair Transplant?

An alopecia hair transplant is suited to clients with many forms of alopecia, including traction alopecia, androgenetic alopecia, also known as pattern hair loss, and medication-related alopecia, technically referred to as anagen effluvium.

We recommend a hair transplant technique called Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE), which uses individual follicles of your own healthy hair sourced from donor sites unaffected by your hair loss. We reimplant them carefully in a precise pattern to ensure each hair has a consistent thickness, quality, and growth pattern.

FUE hair transplants can be used to restore thinning areas of hair, replenish sections with patches with no hair growth, correct signs of alopecia around the sides or crown of your head, and restore eyebrows, beards, and facial hair.

Since this process uses your own hair, the results are perfectly natural. Clinical equipment and advanced tools mean each scratch created during the follicle extraction and reimplantation process is microscopic—there is no scarring, no stitches, and no incisions.

How Does an Alopecia Hair Transplant Work?

KSL Clinic has years of experience with a General Medical Council-registered surgical team and Care Quality Commission regulatory compliance across all our sites. We recommend alopecia hair transplants only when there is a strong likelihood of the surgery being a complete success and based on a comprehensive consultation process.

Hair transplants are performed as walk-in/walk-out procedures, ensuring that your hair transplant is fully completed within a day, and you are free to return home to rest and begin recovery. The exact duration of the treatment will depend on the extent of hair loss and the number of grafts required to achieve your desired look.

The below summarises what you can expect before, during and after your alopecia hair transplant.

Hair Transplant Consultation

Step one is a private discussion with one of KSL Clinic’s talented hair transplant surgeons. This consultation is vital since some types of alopecia may be less suited to a hair transplant. It is essential that we assess your hair loss and scalp health to verify whether a hair transplant will achieve the results you wish.

01

Applying Local Anaesthetic

On the day of your hair transplant, we’ll welcome you to the clinic, a modern, clean and comfortable environment with your choice of entertainment on offer. We will apply a medical-grade local anaesthetic, which means you can stay awake yet will experience no pain throughout the transplant.

02

Removing Donor Follicles

When we are happy that the anaesthetic has taken effect, we will begin extracting individual hairs, one at a time, using a specialised Micro Punch that creates a tiny incision, under one mm across, at each donor follicle site. The donor area is often the back of the head, but this may depend on the locations affected by alopecia.

03

Follicle Grading and Sorting

During the extraction process, a hair transplant technician examines, sorts, and grades each hair—again, one follicle at a time. This enables us to meticulously sort donor hairs and reimplant them in a pre-mapped pattern, selecting hairs based on colour, density, growth direction, and shape.

04

Hair Transplant Grafting

Once the grafts are prepared and approved, the final step is to reimplant them in the target area, whether to the front, sides, or back of your head, across patches of hair loss, to your eyebrows, or to replenish lost facial hair.

05

Post-Transplant Care

After your hair transplant, we’ll apply gentle bandaging to protect the grafts and review all of the aftercare advice and guidance provided, including recommendations for pain relief or medications prescribed to assist with a safe, fast recovery.

What are the Benefits of an Alopecia Hair Transplant?

Alopecia can cause significant damage to your confidence and self-esteem, whether you have some patches of hair that are visibly thinner than others, or have seen more extensive effects, with hair loss around larger sections of your hair, or impacting your facial hair and eyebrows.

Working with KSL Clinic as your private alopecia hair transplant provider assures you of several advantages:

Replenish Alopecia Hair Loss

Hair transplants can effectively reverse the impact of alopecia, ensuring you can design your ideal hairline or facial hair and consult with a qualified, experienced surgeon to customise the transplant to your wishes and requirements.

Pain-Free, Minimally Invasive Procedure

High-quality anaesthetics and advanced hair transplantation facilities ensure our clients have a comfortable hair transplant procedure, with no pain throughout, and avoiding invasive stitches, incisions and scarring common with other less advanced techniques.

Microscopic Hair Transplantation

Our preferred FUE hair transplant approach creates the tiniest of marks that are almost invisible. This means that your scalp will recover very fast and that there will be no scarring or outward indication that you have undergone a hair transplant.

Fast and Full Recovery

Precise hair transplant surgeons create minimal trauma to your skin, which assists in the speed of your recovery. Donor sites heal within just a few days, and you can resume normal activities such as swimming and exercising in around two weeks – more specific aftercare guidance will be provided depending on the location and extent of your hair transplant.

100% Natural Hair Transplantation

FUE transplants use your own hair follicles with no synthetics. That ensures your healed alopecia hair transplant doesn’t only look natural – but that it is, and the transplanted follicles will match the exact colour and texture of all the rest of your hair growth.

Permanent Results

Unlike the vast majority of other alopecia hair loss treatments, transplantation works and provides long-lasting results. Following initial shedding, which is normal and expected, you’ll see fresh hair growth within a few weeks and a longer-term complete replenishment of your hairline.

How Much Does an Alopecia Hair Transplant Cost?

KSL Clinic designs each hair transplant procedure based entirely on your preferences and requirements, so there is no standard cost we can quote or universal one-size-fits-all solution to hair transplantation. Alopecia hair transplants cost between £2500 and £6,500 depending on the area to be treated and the type of hair transplant (corrective surgery, eyebrows, beards, widow’s peaks, hairlines, and crowns).

Instead, we’ll discuss your alopecia and the hairline or facial hair you aspire to have at your free consultation, with pricing dependent on factors such as:

The severity of hair loss in the affected area

The volume of grafts necessary to complete the transplant

The texture, density and type of hair you have

The number of areas impacted by alopecia

The appearance and hairline you’d like to create

Should you wish to spread the cost of your alopecia hair transplant, you can review the details of our monthly hair transplant finance beforehand or discuss this with your hair transplant surgeon.

We believe that hair transplantation can be transformative, especially for people with long-term alopecia and other conditions that affect their appearance. We endeavour to make professional, quality transplants accessible to all.

Please contact your nearest KSL Clinic at your convenience to book a consultation and take the first step towards recreating the ideal hairline and aesthetic you are hoping for.

Alopecia Hair Transplant FAQs

How Can I Determine Whether I Am Suitable for a Hair Transplant?

As we’ve indicated, there are several types of alopecia, and hair transplantation is less likely to be a viable option if you have chronic alopecia areata. This type of alopecia is caused by an autoimmune disease that means hair loss can occur on the head and anywhere else on the body.

However, hair transplants work incredibly well for almost every other alopecia condition, including:

  • Traction alopecia: Hair loss caused by stress or damage to the scalp, often due to wearing tight, high or restrictive hairstyles, headgear or protective safety hats for extended periods of time.
  • Androgenetic alopecia: This is male and female pattern baldness. It is the most common and is often connected with age and genetics since many families have a pattern of hereditary hair loss.
  • Frontal fibrosing alopecia: Hormone-related hair loss that most commonly impacts women following life experiences such as menopause, causing reductions in growth around the frontal hairline and often the eyebrows.
  • Anagen effluvium: A type of alopecia that occurs as a side effect of a medication and where this does not self-correct following a change in the prescribed drug.

During your consultation, we’ll discuss your alopecia and medical history, examine your expectations and how you’d ideally like your hair to look, and assess your scalp to ensure there are sufficient donor hair follicles to make a hair transplant viable.

How Long Is Does a hair transplant take?

Depending on the type of alopecia you have, a professional hair transplant is expected to be permanent. The results are long-lasting and provided you follow the aftercare guidance given and schedule recommended supplementary therapies to support skin and hair regeneration, your hair transplant should remain perfect for years to come.

How Long Should It Take for an Alopecia Hair Transplant to Heal Fully?

Microscopic hair extraction and reimplantation techniques ensure that the recovery time after your transplant is minimal. The donor areas usually heal within as little as a few days, and the new follicles will equally look healed once any residual swelling subsides, also within around a week.

Contrary to traditional hair transplant techniques, FUE transplants do not require large incisions or stitches, so there are no scars, and the healing time is significantly quicker.

How Long Will It Take for an Alopecia Hair Transplant to Grow?

A lot depends on the location of your hair loss and the number of grafts required, but most clients see initial new growth at around three months following their hair transplant surgery. By six months, that growth is thicker, richer and more noticeable, and you’ll see complete replenishment of your hair between nine and 12 months.

How Many Grafts Does it Take to Complete?

Each client is different, and we can only suggest the number of grafts necessary to complete your hair transplant following an analysis of your scalp and the current extent of hair loss. This factor will depend on the size of the area to be treated and the severity of the hair loss, but your surgeon will provide an estimate during your initial consultation.

Are There Any Risks?

Any surgical procedure carries some risks, although hair transplantation is minimally invasive and low-risk. However, a skilled surgeon will always discuss these with you and ensure you have all the information you need to make informed decisions.

Risk factors may include swelling, soreness, bleeding and tightness around the donor and transplant areas, but these can be well controlled with pain relief medications and should stop entirely within at most a week.

Clients with any concerns are welcome to contact KSL Clinic at any time or schedule an additional check-up so that a hair transplant surgeon can verify that the transplant is heading well.
