Disclaimer: First and foremost, KSL Clinic does believe in charging by the graft. This is because we extract the maximum grafts in a surgery. Since every patient is different, we focus on the result rather than the graft, so if additional grafts need to be harvested, we will not stop at a pre-agreed number of grafts to ensure client satisfaction. The information below should only be used as a guide.

Hair transplants are bespoke to you and the coverage area. The exact number of grafts needed could vary from as little as 500 grafts for a minimal procedure replenishing the hair in small areas to 5,000 over two hair transplants for more extensive hair loss, where this level of hair transplantation is viable.

The number of grafts differs so greatly because transplants can be used to restore hair loss and thinning due to a wide range of issues, hair loss patterns, and areas. For example, a client restoring slight thinning around the temple would need far fewer grafts than a client with developed pattern hair loss over the entirety of their crown.

In this guide, we’ve included indications as to the number of grafts you might expect to need, but note that these are approximations and we will not disclose the number of grafts we extract (please read the disclaimer).

Key Summary

  • Every client is unique but you should not focus on the number of grafts needed. Your decision should be made on the agreed final outcome of the procedure, your surgeon’s skill and reputation and aftercare quality.
  • Hair transplants covering the same area may need different numbers of grafts between clients because of factors like hair density, the size and characteristics of the natural hair follicles, and the availability of healthy donor grafts.
  • Smaller hair transplants require approximately 500 to 1,000 grafts, whereas more extensive transplants covering larger areas could need up to 5,000+ grafts. However, this would be completed in phases rather than in one procedure.

Grafts Required for Smaller Areas of Hair Loss

Hair transplants required for smaller areas of coverage, such as to correct hair loss to the temples or around the corners of your hairline, usually require the least number of grafts of any hair transplant procedure to the scalp.

This type of hair transplant needs around 500 to 1,000 grafts and is perfect for achieving light to moderate improvements in hair density in the affected areas. It is often recommended if you’d like to enhance or even out your hairline or fill in small areas of hair loss.

Hair Transplant Grafts to Replenish Small to Medium Areas

Clients looking for moderate improvements in their hair density or investigating the suitability of a hair transplant to correct and improve their hairline or replenish areas with initial signs of thinning may require 1,000 to 1,500 hair grafts.

Hair transplants covering small to medium areas are commonly recommended for clients keen to augment their hairline, address early hair loss across the crown, or correct other hair thinning that hasn’t developed into more extensive hair loss.

The Number of Grafts Necessary for a Medium Hair Transplant

Medium hair transplants require between 1,500 and 2,000 grafts. They are often used for transplantation procedures to correct hair loss over a moderate area, such as thinning or hair loss around the frontal hairline and temples – including earlier-stage widow’s peaks.

This level of hair transplant is best for frontal hairline restoration procedures where the client has some residual growth but wants to improve the density of the hair or achieve more significant improvements in density over a smaller transplant area.

Average Grafts for a Large Coverage Hair Transplant

Larger hair transplants create dense, thick and full hair coverage over slightly bigger areas, such as when completing a hair transplant to restore the entire frontal region of hair and achieve a natural, youthful density.

Hair transplants that cover broader areas, such as from the mid-scalp to the hairline, require an average of 2,000 to 3,000 grafts.

Extensive Grafts for Higher-Density Hair Transplant Procedures

Clients with more extensive hair loss impacting their entire hairline and extending towards the middle of the scalp may need 3,000 to 4,000 grafts during their hair transplant procedure.

This more comprehensive hair transplant is suited to clients who want more substantial coverage and to create a natural, seamless hair growth pattern from the hairline and backwards toward the middle of the scalp, with high-density growth over a bigger area.

Maximum Grafts Required for a Hair Transplant

Finally, the largest hair transplants can involve 4,000 to 5,000 grafts or more. However, given the duration and complexity of the procedure, it is safer and more comfortable to perform the hair transplant in stages (over two procedures).

While a full hair transplant with this number of grafts can deliver comprehensive coverage and high-density growth, completely restoring hair across the whole hairline to the crown, the scalp and follicles must have sufficient time to rest and repair.
