It can be confusing knowing what is right and wrong with your head, everyone has a different experience with their scalp. Of course, you may consider your hair too short to bother with most days. But if you find yourself wondering what’s going on up there, it’s best to not be in the dark about the health of a vital part of your body.

There are a number of questions that people are left asking about their hair on a daily basis.

Does it Grow?

At some point, you may notice that your hair has stopped growing. Hair is caught up in a constant cycle of regeneration, degeneration and rest. Sometimes this cycle can be disrupted and this causes a period without growth. There are many reasons that this may occur, most of which are due to lifestyle factors.

One factor which often disrupts growth is hormones. These are a big part of the hair life cycle, both promoting hair growth and helping to regulate it over a period of time. A change to these hormones can lead to the period of hair growing, which usually lasts over a two-year period, to be extended. This may lead to much less hair growth overall.

Another factor which may halt the growth of your hair is stress. An increased stress level may cause the complete stop of your hair cycle, or potent physical and emotional stress can even cause your hair to fall out altogether. This is usually a condition that will resolve itself. You must treat the external factor of stress before you see an improvement in the health of your hair.

Does it Hurt?

You may be experiencing discomfort or itchiness. This can be as a result of a number of factors. In extreme cases, it may lead to you losing clumps of hair in the affected areas.

Harsh chemicals, fungal and bacterial infections, excessive scalp oil, muscle contraction headaches and contact dermatitis are a few of the main reasons for your scalp to itch or otherwise be sore. Determining the problem can be the hardest part of solving it. Solving it may be a simple case of using less aggressive oils when washing your hair, or massaging your scalp with essential oils in order to promote a healthier scalp overall. A clean scalp is often an indicator of a healthy scalp, so regularly cleaning is advisable, although you must ensure that you do not wash too often and dry it out. A thorough wash is only necessary every two days or so.

Does it Ever Fall Out?

A degree of hair loss is normal; people lose hair every day as part of a healthy hair lifecycle. But sometimes you may notice that you are losing more hair than usual. Patchiness or large clumps of hair falling out when washing are indicators of a larger problem. Stress, as already stated, can be a factor in hair loss in men. But there are other issues that may be the real cause of the problem.

Hereditary hair loss is often the main villain in the tale of losing your hair. This is known as androgenetic alopecia, the gene for this can be inherited from either your mother or father. You are more likely to have it if both of your parents have suffered hair loss also. Medicine can help to slow this process; men, in particular, can try the oral medication Propecia or using a hair loss stimulant whilst washing on a daily basis.
