Hair thinning towards the front of your head is very likely the first stage of male pattern baldness. Various treatments, from PRP and laser therapies to hair transplants, can replenish lost hair, reshape your hairline, or reduce the visible nature of thinning.

We appreciate that noticing a thinning and receding hairline can be stressful and emotionally challenging. The positive is that ample support is available, starting with a complimentary consultation to assess the options and suitable treatments.

A clinical assessment of your scalp and hair is key since this helps us determine whether a hair transplant is the best option, the stage of hair loss you have reached, or if an alternative non-surgical therapy might be most advisable.

Treating Hair Thinning at the Front of Your Scalp: Key Facts

  • Visible thinning to the front of your scalp and around the temples is a tell-tale sign of androgenetic alopecia or male pattern baldness. This is largely genetic and isn’t something you can necessarily prevent or avoid.
  • There are, though, treatments from topical medications that can slow the pace of hair thinning, restoration therapies to boost the thickness of your current growth, or bespoke hair transplants to transform the appearance of your hair.
  • Our advice is always to book a consultation at any of the KSL Clinic locations. We’ll discuss your concerns, evaluate your hair growth, and provide independent, confidential recommendations.

Reasons You May See Hair Thinning at the Front of Your Head

As we’ve noted, hair thinning is most normally attributed to male pattern baldness and is linked to genetics and hereditary hair growth patterns that are usually passed down between generations.

The primary cause is also age-related. When the body breaks down testosterone, it produces an enzyme called dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Although DHT is naturally occurring, it can cause sensitivities in follicles, which then start to thin or shed.

One of the easiest ways to visualise the typical pattern and stages of pattern hair loss is to look at the Norwood scale. We use it to measure the progress of androgenetic hair loss and decide on the ideal time for a hair transplant.

Alternative Reasons for Thinning in the Front

Aside from pattern hair loss, thinning around the temples can also be down to:

  • Alopecia areata, another form of alopecia but one that is linked to autoimmune dysfunctions rather than genetic hair loss.
  • Traction alopecia caused by stress, tension and pressure on your hair, such as wearing dreadlocks, braids, very tight ponytails or restrictive headgear.
  • Side effects of some medications, including chemotherapy.
  • Issues linked to thyroid problems like hyperthyroidism.
  • Telogen effluvium, a largely temporary stress-related form of hair loss, although one that can cause longer term follicular damage.

Although about 95% of cases of male hair loss are down to androgenetic alopecia, it may be worth having other potential causes looked into, especially if you have secondary symptoms or a known medical condition, because this might impact the viable treatment options.

How to Fix Thinning at the Front of Your Head

As always, the best solutions will depend on the stage of hair loss, the extent of the affected areas, the results you’d like to see, and the availability of donor hair follicles.

It’s also important to clarify that very early pattern hair loss isn’t always the ideal timing for a transplant, but we’ll offer more personalised guidance during a private hair transplant consultation.

Correcting Hair Thinning With Medications

Finasteride and minoxidil are two of the most-used medications for hair loss. The former is solely for men and interrupts the processes that produce DHT, thereby reducing the amounts in your system and preventing or slowing further follicular damage.

Minoxidil is suitable for any gender and is usually sold as a topical treatment applied directly to the scalp. Also sold under the brand name Regaine, it encourages a better flow of blood to the scalp, supporting healthy skin and follicles.

Tackling Frontal Hair Loss With Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapy

Another solution is platelet-rich plasma therapy, or PRP, one of the highest demand non-surgical therapies we offer here at KSL Clinic. The treatment is safe, effective and clinically proven and works as follows:

  • We extract a small blood sample, place it in a centrifuge to separate the blood components, and ensure the platelet-rich plasma is readily available.
  • Those bioactive compounds are injected into areas affected by hair loss, stimulating dormant follicles, promoting cellular and tissue regeneration, and prompting inactive hair to re-enter a growth cycle.

PRP is often suitable for clients with earlier-stage hair loss who either aren’t yet in a position where they’d like to undergo a hair transplant or where we feel like a hair transplant at this point may not be suitable.

It is also commonly recommended as an aspect of hair transplant recovery. PRP is used to expedite the healing process, speed up the pace at which new follicles grow, and create a healthy environment for faster tissue and hair growth.

However, PRP is also used as a standalone hair restoration treatment and in various other clinical applications, given its wide-ranging benefits in terms of tissue healing and faster recovery.

Addressing Frontal Hair Thinning With a Hair Transplant

We’ve noted that if front hair thinning is an aspect of pattern hair loss and there is a strong likelihood of further balding, it could be advisable to delay a hair transplant until the hair loss is controlled and has slowed or plateaued.

That is because progressive and unmanaged hair loss inevitably means more follicles will shed, or thinning around the transplant area will create an uneven appearance.

This doesn’t mean that a bespoke hair transplant isn’t sometimes an excellent resolution or that the treatment cannot correct thinning. However, the timings we recommend will depend on a thorough evaluation of your scalp and a discussion about the outcomes and appearance you’d like to achieve.
